Focus on the care of lactating sows and piglets that results in a maximum number of high quality, healthy pigs weaned.
Ensure that all animals across the farm have received proper feed, water, and bedding daily, and 100% of all NR protocol and guidelines are followed.
Assist with other aspects of the farm as assigned to ensure farm goals and targets are met and tasks are completed daily.
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide an ideal environment for sows and nursing pigs by ensuring proper seasonal adjustments such as ventilation, bedding, curtains and wallows.
Daily observation and walking of pens to monitor health and productivity of sows and piglets.
Provide accurate data on production records.
Handle sows and piglets in a calm and humane manner.
Maintain a clean / orderly appearance of grounds around farrowing unit / office.
Protect health and safety of staff and humane treatment of animals.
Recognize problems and take corrective actions.
Recognize and manage special situations that require special attention or treatment.
Anticipate and prevent problems rather than allowing problems to develop and progress and then reacting to them.
Minimize the number of problem litters.
Maintenance and cleaning of huts, waters, feeders and fences.
Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, concerns or questions.
Conserve farm resources such as supplies, equipment and time.
Communicate openly and freely with others.
High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience in hog production will be considered an asset
Ability to problem solve, be a critical thinker, goal oriented, and a team player
Effective communication skills (oral and written)
Willingness to work outside year round
Weekend and holiday hours are required on a rotational basis
Organize, prioritize, and manage time of the department to maximize quality and efficiency of work.
Be a positive example in attitude, respect, honesty, integrity and work ethic.
Promote cooperation within different departments and contribute to flexibility of staffing and equipment sharing.
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
This position is a farm position which requires to work in all types of weather year round. Ability to work with and handle livestock.
