The Operations Safety Lead acts to ensure all operational safety compliance protocols and protections are in place, and fully functional by performing multiple safety/security audits throughout the production shift. The position will provide safety & hazard recognition training to department safety representatives and audit the reps’ daily inspections to ensure they are completed in a quality manner. The OSL will be responsible for training all new safety reps, delivering general safety training such as new-hire safety orientation, forklift training, and any other general safety duties directed by management and prepare the weekly safety topics used by supervisors in huddle meetings. The OSL will perform various administrative and/or compliance duties associated with the Perdue Safety Program, and the annual Corporate Safety Audit for operations. Overtime may be required based on production needs.
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs daily audits within operations to ensure all plant safety protocols and procedures are being strictly adhered too. Inspections will emphasize and reinforce the daily inspections performed by the safety reps to ensure no potential hazard has been missed or gone uncorrected. The OSL will train all new department safety reps on the daily inspection process they are to perform and the check sheets used to capture any potential hazard. The OSL will periodically update daily department inspection check sheets to ensure they thoroughly cover all potential hazards in the department. The OSL will ensure all hazards identified by safety reps are reported to supervision, and the team leader advised of the corrective action taken.
Perform various safety training requirements necessary to ensure associates understand their safety responsibilities. These include: new-hire orientation, forklift safety training, hazard communication requirements, material handling techniques, PPE, machine guarding and LOTO. Some office work and filing will be required also. The OSL will be required to work various shifts and some weekends when production is running in order to delivery training to associates. The OSL will assist operations management and the Safety & Security Manager in developing the weekly safety topics covered by supervisors in the daily huddle meetings. The OSL will attend department/shift huddle meetings to assist team leaders with covering these safety topics when needed. The OSL will rotate through all department huddle meetings throughout the month to ensure safety topics are being covered by team leaders in an effective way and report findings to senior management.
Perform various administrative duties within the Plant’s Safety & Security department. Assist the Director of Operations, S&S Manager, Plant Safety Steering Committee and Regional Safety Manager in preparing for the Corporate Safety Audit or any safety related audit within the plant. Coordinates the plant’s new-hire ramp-in program to ensure all new-hires are ergonomically orientated into their new positions. Will maintain all ramp-in documentation requirements and provide regular reports to the plant steering committee on the ramp-in program’s effectiveness. Serve as the chairperson for the Safety Committee (Hourly) Meetings. Assist with the safety newsletter. 11. In the absence of the Safety & Security Manager, perform any safety or security related duty that is required.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
A minimum of 5-years further processing work experience and an equivalent familiarity with the production equipment used in the operations. Advanced computer skills using WORD, Excel & PowerPoint.
At least 3-years’ experience serving as a plant safety representative or other related safety experience gained at other employers; or, through military or voluntary fire/emergency rescue service organizations. An advance degree or related work experience as a safety professional. Bi-lingual (Spanish) is a plus.
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
When in a plant environment:
Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors which include metal and plastic grating surfaces.
May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and 100% humidity.
May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 db to 110 db.
May be exposed to dust, feathers and all chemicals used in poultry, food, processing facility.
Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the Company.
Occasional exposure to carbon dioxide vapors 10ppm and chlorine less than 20 ppm.
Able to stand for several hours.
Work may include lifting (up to 50 lbs), reaching, bending, pushing boxes on conveyor assembly.
