Perdue Farms, Inc. Environmental Manager in Mount Vernon, Washington
Position would be responsible for compliance with all current and future federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements at the plant level. This position will be responsible to ensure compliance with various regulatory programs and applicable permits. Environmental areas of concern are air, storm water, waste water, recycling, hazardous/universal waste, solid waste, land application, oil control and chemical compliance. The Environmental Manager is expected to champion all opportunities that will reduce the facilities “carbon foot-print”, promote environmental sustainability, assist with the development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems and assist with Corporate Environmental Audits. It also includes assisting with the development and implementation of sustainable waste recycling programs, and the establishment and implementation of activities that will reduce the facility’s consumption of natural gas, diesel fuel, electricity, compressed air, steam and water. The protection of the environment by positive actions of Company associates will greatly enhance our Company’s public image and reduce Company liability in the environmental arena. The environmental complexity and resultant liabilities for the areas of responsibility of this associate will depend on the type of facility in which he or she is assigned.
Provide technical support and experience on environmental issues and regulatory issues of an environmental nature to the Environmental Managers within the AgriBusiness and Food Products business organizations. Support the VP, Environmental Sustainability in the key environmental initiatives for the Company. Serve as the Subject Matter Expert on the Environmental Stewardship Committee.
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide direction, guidance and advice regarding environmental laws and regulations, as they are applicable to the Company. Be able to advise and guide senior management of the implications of new environmental laws and regulations.
Provide direction, guidance and advice to environmental managers within the business units related to environmental laws and regulations, the potential impact on their operations and avenues for compliance.
Assists the VP in the development of policy and guidance documents, creation and implementation of environmental initiatives, review of the annual environmental capital budget and provide guidance and advice on community relations.
Travel to all Company operations and locations to assess the implementation of various environmental programs at the operational level. Provide direction and guidance on improvements to those programs. Provide technical assistance to operational level environmental programs.
Represent the Company at various industry and trade associations, government/regulatory agencies and other outside functions. Attend national and state environmental meetings. Participate in environmental forums related to industry issues, regulation development and legislative sessions.
Investigate, evaluate and make recommendations to the VP and applicable operations and environmental management regarding new technology and processes in the environmental field.
Participate, as required, during any environmental emergency and/or crisis within the Company.
Assist with the development of new and less experienced Environmental Managers.
Bachelors degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology or Chemistry.
Prefer: MS degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology or Chemistry.
7+ years related work experience. Requires a broad-based working knowledge, understanding and application of federal environmental laws and regulations. Excellent written and oral communications skills required.
Knowledge and understanding of state and local environmental laws and regulations would be desirable. Organizational and personal skills highly desirable. A Register Environmental Manager (REM) certification, a P.E., or other applicable recognized certification is a plus.
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
Position is mostly sedentary but may require occasional moving to other offices or buildings.
May need to move light equipment or supplies from one place to another.
May need to access files, supplies and equipment.
Work activity is in an office, open-partitioned, cubicle environment.
Walking for an extended period of time may be required.
When in a plant environment:
• Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors which include metal and plastic grating surfaces.
• May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and 100% humidity.
• May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
• May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 db to 110 db.
• May be exposed to all chemicals found in poultry, food and processing plant.
• Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the Company
