Summary

The Operations Safety Lead (OSL) will assist the Safety and Security Manager (S&S Mgr.) in ensuring all operational safety compliance protocols and protections are in place, and fully functional by performing various safety duties throughout the production shift. The position will assist in providing safety & hazard recognition training to current department safety representatives and audit the representative’s daily inspections to ensure they are completed in a timely and quality manner. The OSL will be responsible for ensuring all training is provided to the department safety reps, the delivery of basic safety training such as new-hire safety orientation and any other general safety duties as directed by management (whether directly or through the safety trainer). In addition, The OSL will also assist in preparing the weekly safety topics used by supervisors in huddle meetings. The OSL will perform various administrative and/or compliance duties associated with the Perdue Safety Program, and the annual Corporate Safety Audit for operations.

Compensation Data

This position has a target hourly wage of $22.50-$26.00.

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs daily audits within operations to ensure all plant safety protocols and procedures are being strictly adhered too. The OSL will train all new department safety reps on the daily inspection process they are to perform, and the check sheets used to capture any potential hazard. The OSL will ensure all hazards identified by safety reps are reported to supervision, and the team leader advised of the corrective action taken.

Assist in performing various safety training requirements as necessary to ensure associates understand their safety responsibilities including the facilities powered industrial truck licensing process. This shall include: new-hire orientation, hazard communication requirements, material handling techniques and PPE. The OSL may be required to work various shifts and some weekends when production is running in order to perform safety duties or deliver training to associates.

The OSL will assist the Safety & Security Manager in developing the weekly safety topics covered by supervisors in the daily huddle meetings. The OSL will attend department/shift huddle meetings to assist supervisors with covering these safety topics when needed. The OSL will assist in attending department huddle meetings throughout the month to ensure safety topics are being covered by team leaders in an effective way and report findings to senior management.

Perform various administrative duties within the Plant’s Safety department. Assist the Director of Operations, S&S Manager, Plant Safety Supervisor, Plant Safety Steering Committee and Corporate Safety Director in preparing for the Corporate Safety Audit or any safety related audit, including regulatory inspections within the facility.

Coordinates the plant’s new-hire ramp-in program to ensure all new-hires are ergonomically orientated into their new positions. Will maintain all ramp-in documentation requirements and provide regular reports to the plant steering committee on the ramp-in program’s effectiveness.

In the absence of the Safety & Security Manager, the OST will perform any safety related duties that are required.

Minimum Education

High school diploma or GED is required

Experience Requirements

A minimum of 3-5-years operations work experience and an equivalent familiarity with the production equipment used in the operations. Proficient computer skills using WORD, Excel & PowerPoint.

Experience Preferred

At least 3-years experience serving as a plant safety representative or other related safety experience gained at other employers; or, through military or voluntary fire/emergency rescue service organizations. An advance degree or related work experience as a safety professional.

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

  • Will require frequent lifting, occasionally some objects will weigh more than 50 lbs.

  • The position is not sedentary. It requires constant foot travel throughout the production areas and plant grounds. Sometimes these areas may be congested. The incumbent must be able to obtain a valid power industrial vehicle operator’s license, and conduct said safety training as needed.

  • Will need to be able to read and access files, handle and inspect various chemicals used within the operation, inspect operational production machinery for hazards and inspect/use powered motorized vehicles.

  • Work activity is primarily in a production environment, but confined space entry could be required.

  • Incumbents should possess a valid DMV license and be able driver to remote/live production or breeder sites to perform safety and security job duties.
